The Better Mulch Company

Frequently Asked Questions

There is a difference between Bark Mulch and Hardwood mulch and recycled mulch. DO NOT BE CONFUSED BY THIS! BE SURE OF WHAT YOU ARE BUYING! Many companies sell recycled stump mulch calling it double shredded hardwood mulch. Here is what you need to know.

What Does Mulch Do?

Definition: In addition to beautification, mulch moderates soil temperature and makes a more favorable environment for roots. It reduces evaporation of moisture, helping to conserve water. It reduces splashing from rain or irrigation water, reduces the spread of disease, and helps to stop the germination of many weed seeds.

What are the Types and Differences?

Double Shredded Hardwood Bark is at least 85% actual tree bark. Bark takes longer to breakdown and returns more nutrients to the soil as it turns into compost. Bark is less coarse and has a more finished look to it. Bark is also less susceptible to insect damage and disease.
Double Shredded Hardwood Mulch is at least 70% wood. Hardwood is defined as the trunk (bark removed) of the tree. Hardwood breaks down faster than bark, tends to draw nutrients from the soil, is coarser than bark and is more susceptible to insect damage and disease.
Dyed Mulch is hardwood mulch or recycled wood that is dyed usually red, various browns or black. Dyed mulch is not chemically treated. The advantage of dyed mulch is that the color is more resistant to fading..

What thickness do I need?

We recommend 6" of mulch for new beds and 3" of mulch for existing beds.

How do I know how much mulch to order?

One cubic yard of mulch will cover a 100 square feet 3 inches deep. For existing mulch areas MFJ recommends a 3 inch depth and for new mulch areas MFJ recommends a 6 inch depth. We also have a Mulch Calculator for your convenience. Of course, if you need assistance in figuring how much to order, just give us a call.
